Solidjon's Journey: Courage, Trust and a New Future

At just 13 years old, Solidjon from Uzbekistan has already faced challenges that would test even the strongest adults. After difficult experiences at other hospitals, he and his family came to the University Children's Hospital Zurich in 2022 in search of something they had been missing for a long time: trust, confidence and hope.

Solidjon was born with a congenital vascular malformation on his back. Pain was a constant part of his everyday life, as were the daily wound dressings he required. In Zurich, however, a new chapter began. A specialised multidisciplinary team for vascular anomalies took the time to listen, understand his situation and develop an individualised treatment plan together with Solidjon and his family.

"The doctors explained every step of the treatment in a way we could understand. That trust gave us tremendous strength," his family recalls.

Following extensive assessments and treatment with targeted medical therapy, the team was finally able to take the next major step: surgically removing the malformation, followed by a complex reconstructive procedure. Over the course of several weeks, Solidjon received highly specialised care at the University Children's Hospital Zurich.

"The fact that Solidjon is now free from pain is the result of careful planning and close collaboration between specialists in Dermatology, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and Interventional Radiology," explains PD KD Dr. med. Kathrin Neuhaus, Head of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University Children's Hospital Zurich.

What the medical team achieved here has given our son a new future.

Today, life looks very different. Solidjon is free from pain, no longer needs daily wound dressings and is able to enjoy everyday life with far greater ease once again.

"We also continue to support Solidjon through specialised orthopaedic care. Due to a neurological gait disorder, he underwent surgery followed by intensive rehabilitation at the Swiss Children's Rehab Centre. Today, he works every day to improve his walking and is making excellent progress," says Professor Thomas Dreher, Head of Paediatric Orthopaedics, Neuro-orthopaedics and Traumatology.

For Solidjon's family, however, what left the greatest impression went far beyond the medical treatment itself.

"Beyond the outstanding medical care, it was the kindness and compassion we experienced that touched us most. We were not only cared for as a family – we felt genuinely understood. Every nurse, every therapist and every member of the team helped us feel safe," says Solidjon's mother.

Anyone who meets Solidjon today is immediately struck by his zest for life. He loves football, spends every spare moment with his two dogs and has recently discovered a passion for cooking. His dreams are ambitious. One day, he hopes to study business administration and establish his own restaurant chain.

His journey is far from over. But he continues to face the future with courage, confidence and a clear vision of what lies ahead.
