Shaping the future of pediatric medicine

The University Children’s Hospital is an independent institution with a 150-year history of successful pediatric research and an official teaching and research mandate from the University of Zurich. As the largest academic pediatric hospital in Switzerland, we are working tirelessly to translate today’s pediatric research into tomorrow’s standard of care.

Endocrinology and diabetology

Research focus

  • In our basic research, we are studying the development of obesity-associated insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes mellitus in cell cultures and using various mouse models. Several projects are in progress.

  • For over 15 years we have been conducting a longitudinal study on the cognitive and neuromotor development of children with an early diagnosis of type 1 diabetes.

  • Our third focus is on the epidemiology of type 1 diabetes in Switzerland, on the one hand retrospectively, with data dating back to 1948, and on the other hand prospectively covering the whole of Switzerland since 1991. We first published on this in 2001.

In addition, we are always working on case reports or unusual observations.

Our division also participates in the worldwide TRIGR study, which investigates whether cow's milk proteins are a possible cause of type 1 diabetes in children from birth.

Several research projects are funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. Without the financial support of the pharmaceutical industry and private sponsors, our long-term projects, our basic research, educational counselling, psychological support, and nutritional counselling would not be possible.
