The role of motion sensitive brain in reading: an fMRI study

Developmental dyslexia has been associated with deficits in visual motion processing in the middle temporal area V5/MT. However, the exact nature of this deficiency and its potential relationship to reading impairments are still unclear. The aim in this study is to clarify, whether highly specialized regions such as the motion selective brain area V5/MT is recruited during visual form processing and reading.

Methods:

  • Subjects: 15 healthy adults (20 - 30 years)
  • Experiments:
    -  visual motion & explicit reading task
    -  form discrimination task (letters & symbols)
    -  implicit reading task (words & non-words)
  • fMRI: 3 T MR Scanner
  • Experiments:
    -  visual motion & explicit reading task
    -  form discrimination task (letters & symbols)
    -  implicit reading task (words & non-words)
