Hypospadia StudyHypospadias StudyPsychosexual development, psychosocial adjustment and quality of life of children and adolescents with hypospadias. SummaryHypospadias is the most common malformation of the penis and is characterized by a disturbance of the urethral development. It is manifested by an abnormal urethral opening occurring proximal to its normal location in the glans, on the ventral surface of the penis or in the perineum. Surgical correction can improve cosmetic and functional deficiencies, but a perfect penis cannot be achieved. These deficiencies as well as the stress related to surgery may have a negative impact on the patients’ development and quality of life, issues on which scientific data is scarce. The aim of this study is to investigate whether hypospadia has an impact on the boys’ psychosexual development, psychosocial adjustment and quality of life and to identify factors that may influence that development. In a cross-sectional study, 80 boys and adolescents (7 to 17 years) operated on for hypospadias at the University Children's Hospital Zurich between 1991 and 2005 were assessed for possible medical and psychosocial risk factors and were compared with 80 age-matched, healthy boys after inguinal hernia repair. The boys were assessed with a standardized interview and a medical examination (hypospadia patients only) and their parents were asked to answer a questionnaire.
